DescriptionA JEAN-BAPTISTE CARPEAUX (French, 1827-1875) MARBLE BUST: LE RIEUR NAPOLITAIN
Paris, France, late 19th century
Marks: JB Carpeaux
21 inches high (53.3 cm)
The bust in white marble depicting the "Happy Neapolitan," one of several versions he made of the Neapolitan fisher-boy. Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, a French sculptor and painter who traveled to Rome where he won the Prix de Rome in 1854, was famous for the works he completed for Napoleon III. He submitted one of his sculptures, Pêcheur Napolitain à la coquille to the French Academy which led to further commissions from Napoleon III and the sale of the original work in plaster to him for his empress, Eugenie.
Presents well overall. Minor inclusions and scratches to the marble commensurate with creation and age. With a chip to the front lock of hair and a spot where fill has come out of the shoulder.
