A French Painted Fan with Ballooning Motif, circa 1790
    11-1/8 inches high x 19 inches wide (28.3 x 48.3 cm) (largest, unfolded)

    Bonhams, Fine Ballooning Art: The Property of a Gentleman, 16 December 1991, Lot. 34;
    Acquired from the above.

    The fan having partial gilt bone end-pieces with reticulated carving exhibiting mother-of-pearl veneer to recesses, rhinestones mounted to pin, reticulated scrollwork to bone endspieces below paper including avian, floral, and figural motifs, folded paper interior opening to reveal two small cartouches with male and female portraits flanking large center cartouche, each depicting balloon ascents, reverse of fan with pastoral scene.

    The scene depicts a Montgolfier ascent at the Pilatre de Rozeir in the Le Flessel balloon from Lyon, France, January 19, 1784. The smaller vignettes show the ascent by the Marquis d'Arlandes and Pilatre de Rozier in a Montgolfier from La Muette, November 21, 1783, and the ascent by Abbe Bertrand in the Dijon balloon in April 1784.

    Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000.

    Condition Report*:

    Some wear to paint at creases, some age-related toning, very minute separations at folds to extreme edges, minor losses to mother-of-pearl veneer to recesses, presenting well with wear commensurate with age and use.
