    TWO CARVED IVORY CANES: ONE LADY'S CANE AND ONE DOCTOR'S CANE
    35 inches overall length, lady's cane (88.9 cm); 33-5/8 inches overall length, doctor's cane (85.4 cm)

    The lady's cane, circa 1800, with 18 karat gold chased knob and ivory shaft carved as bamboo. The shaft is pierced and set with gold eyelets to thread silk wrist strap. The ivory cane shaft has an iron tipped gold ferrule. The doctor's cane knob has a pierced top and untwists to reveal a vinaigrette. The doctor sniffed the rose water or antiseptic kept in the knob when working in contagious wards to mask the odor and protect from virus. The shaft is made of three lengths that screw together with gold ferrule on end piece.

    Lady's cane in excellent condition, doctor's cane has vertical crack at top of shaft near knob and knob has vertical crack at base otherwise very good condition
