    Description

SIX MEISSEN PLATES FROM THE 'THREE EMPEROR SERVICE'
Meissen factory - White Porcelain, Manufactured between 1810 and 1820
    10 inches diameter

    PROVENANCE:
    From a Princely family

    LITERATURE:
The Avalon Project at Yale Law School. (2003). "The Three Emperors' League."

These rare plates are from the celebrated Three Emperors Dinner Service.

In 1872, the King of Saxony presented the service in Germany at the famous meeting of the three Emperors (Three Emperors League); Alexander II of Russia, Wilhelm I of Prussia and Franz Joseph of Austria. The chief architects of the meeting were Julius Andrássy, Otto von Bismarck, and Prince Gorchakov. The aims of the league were to preserve the social order of the conservative powers of Europe and to keep the peace between Austria-Hungary and Russia.

Each of the Emperors was gifted with 400 pieces.

The white porcelain for the service was originally manufactured between 1810 and 1820. The hand painting of the entire service took over thirty years (from the 1830s to the 1870) and depicts themes from paintings by Watteau.

This is the first time that any parts of that Three Emperors Service have been offered at auction.
