DescriptionJosef Hartwig (German, 1880-1955)
Schachspiel XVI (Chess Set), circa 1924, Bauhaus
Stained and natural pear wood
1-7/8 inches high (4.8 cm) (king)
Box stamped HARTWIG/ BAUHAUS/ DESSAU/ GES. GESCH.
Master of wood and stonework, Josef Hartwig, taught at Staatliches Bauhaus in Weimar from 1921-1925. During his time at the school, Hartwig designed this simplified chess set which reduced the identities of each piece into rigid angles and spheres. In keeping with Gropius' teachings, this severe set is an example of the school's building and material ethics, simple and honest. The thirty-two pieces are housed in their original box.
Missing element to the box's latch and repairs to the hinges, each piece shows small signs of wear indicative of play and age.
