    An Important Egyptian Falcon Mummy and Sarcophagus, Late Dynastic-Ptolemaic Period, 350-50 BC
    19 inches high (48.3 cm)

    Provenance:
    Northeast U.S. Private Collection, said to have been purchased in Cairo in the early 1950's, during the time of the Farouk palace sales, and was cleared for release by the Cairo museum at that time;
    Ira & Larry Goldberg Auctioneers, Beverly Hills, Manuscript and Collectibles Auction, April 15, 2006, lot 871;
    Acquired by the owner from the above.


    The carved wood anthropoid mummy case with falcon head form, body gessoed and with extensive polychrome decoration throughout, head with well painted facial markings and a lappet wig in blue-gray with jeweled ends and with a beaded broad collar, garment motifs include a pair of falcon heads with solar discs at shoulders, two djed pillars, one with flanking uraeii, a ba bird towards the feet, seven vertical hieroglyphic registers, alternating in blue and creme, the reverse case painted in a light tan-ocher color, with single register of glyphs along the back; mummy with simple wrappings.

    Condition Report*:

    Some flaking and losses to painted areas throughout (most noticeably to top of head), two broken shivs to upper case that affix lid to lower half, mummy with light deterioration to linen wrappings, overall very good condition.
