MALCOLM S. FORBES COLLECTION: COMMEMORATIVE CHESS PIECE OF HISTORICAL AND POLITICAL IMPORTANCE RELATED TO THE TRANSATLANTIC TELEGRAPH, 1897
    3 inches high (7.6 cm)

The gilt-bronze piece with a section of cable at its core was designed by Carlo and Arthur Giuliano to commemorate the historical chess match played by cable between The House of Commons in London and The House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., in 1897. John Henniker Heaton, a British Conservative MP, and U.S. Representative Richmond Pearson of North Carolina planned the challenge, what is believed to be the only match played between the governments. Lasting two days, the match resulted in a draw, each side winning 2½ games. A souvenir chess piece made from a section of cable was presented to each player as a memento. The matches were held to promote goodwill and played in fun only, but the players took them very seriously.

It would indeed have been much simpler to work with a local auction house, and we had local options. But we never once regretted going with Heritage.
