A James Sadler-Presented First English Balloonist Medal and Letter, 1811
    53 mm diameter (medal)

    Bonhams, Fine Ballooning Art: The Property of a Gentleman, 16 December 1991, Lot. 30;
    Acquired from the above.

    The medal having Sadler bust to obverse arched above with JAMES SADLER. FIRST ENGLISH AERONAUT, sculptors initials P.W.F. (Peter Wyon), reverse with detailed balloon gondola encircled by THE 21 ASCENT, ASCENDED FROM BIRMINGHAM, TRAVERS'D UPWARDS OF 112 MILES IN 1 HOUR & 20 MINUTES, OCTOBER 7, 1811.

    Accompanying the medal is a handwritten letter:
    This Silver Medal was given to me by Mr. Sadler October the 25th 1811. Being made out of four Dollars which had been with him several times above the clouds in his aerial excursions. At my Death I request it may be given to Harry should he survive me, as he saw him ascend from Vauxhall Birmingham at the time the Medal commemorates.
    Solihull, Mary Ann Davies
    October 25, 1811

    Note: The claim that the medal was formed from silver coins is dubious, as the example appears to be a plated pewter example.
