DescriptionViktor Schreckengost (American, 1906-2008)
Pedal Pursuit Plane (Child's Pedal Car), 1941, Murray Ohio Manufacturing Company
Enameled steel, rubber
24 x 23 x 47 inches (61.0 x 58.4 x 119.4 cm)
Artist's own 1941 first-issue model
Stamford Museum and Nature Center, Stamford, Connecticut, "Pedal to the Metal: A History of Children's Pedal Cars," November 2004.
Most beloved of all Viktor's pedal cars, the Pursuit Plane was designed as an elegant Brancusi-like egg shape that looked fun while maintaining the illusion of a real plane with its short wings that fit through standard doorways, and a propeller that turned when the machine moved forward. This lot is accompanied by a silver gelatin print of the Murray Ohio Manufacturing assembly line, showing the Pursuit Plane in production. The image measures 9.5 x 12.5 inches, in a 19.25 x 22.25 inch frame.
Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000.
