During the 1970s and early 1980s, Rome-based Philippine sculptor Tomas Concepcion was a frequent exhibitor in the Palm Springs region. Gallerist Kay Obergfel introduced the desert art community to his elegant figurative works which focused during that period primarily upon the nude form in motion. Dance and a lithe athleticism characterize both his single and multi-figural groupings, all of which were cast in bronze in Roman foundries according to the traditional lost wax method. Concepcion's works in the Paul Gregory collection date from the beginning of his mature phase as a sculptor when he first began to achieve the effect of the human form seeming to float or hover in the air rather than appearing frozen in arrested action. The lyricism of Concepcion's figures are a testament to the sculptor's ability to refine the linear profiles of the bodies from all angles, and design pleasing negative spaces formed by the criss-crossing limbs.

Concepcion was born in the Philippine Islands and came to the United States to study painting at San Francisco State College. He continued his artistic training at the École des Beaux Arts in Montreal and the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. Once in Rome, where he has lived since 1960, he shifted his artistic focus from painting to sculpture after discovering the sophisticated beauty of Greek and Hellenistic art. He has won many important sculptural commissions, including a portrait of Pope Paul VI displayed at the Vatican University, a monument of Pope John Paul II displayed in Guam, and a two meter statue of Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr.
