    Description

    Dawson Dawson-Watson (British/American, 1864-1939)
    Madame Baudy Sr., Giverny, 1890
    Oil on canvas
    12-3/4 x 18-1/4 inches (32.4 x 46.4 cm)
Signed and dated lower right: Dawson-Watson / 1890

In 1864, Dawson Dawson-Watson was born in London. Having shown artistic talent from a young age, he studied with several artists in England before being sent to Paris to further his formal training. In 1888, he met and married Mary Hoyt Sellar, an American traveling in France with Houston artist Emma Richardson Cherry. The couple moved to the American artist colony at Giverny, France, where they lived for five years. Madame Baudy Sr., Giverny, 1890 and Picking a Posy 1891 where painted during that time and represent an important direct link between American and French Impressionism.
The couple moved to the New England in 1893, but by 1915 were splitting their time between San Antonio and Saint Louis. In 1926, Dawson-Watson officially settled in San Antonio to compete in the Texas Wildflower Exhibition where he won the first national prize. He became well-known for his impressionistic Texas landscapes, especially those containing cacti. The vivid colors and painterly brushwork found in Cactus Blossoms, 1929 are classic elements of his signature style.
Dawson-Watson is among the most sought after Texas impressionists, which is fitting for an artist who bridges the gap between French and Texian Impressionism. Throughout the rest of his life he would continue to exhibit successfully in the North America as he previously did in Europe-gathering accolades from numerous prestigious institutions like the Royal Academy in London, 1886, the Paris Salon, 1888, Southern Arts League, 1931, and Mississippi Art Association, 1930.
