    Description

    David James Gilhooly (American, 1943-2013)
    Monumental Totem, 1991
    Ceramic
    34 x 15 inches (86.4 x 38.1 cm)
    Incised to underside Gilhooly, 1991

PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE LOS ANGELES COLLECTION

David Gilhooly was a member of the so called Funk Ceramic Movement in 1960s California's Bay Area, whose antiestablishment work was seen as a reaction against the nonobjectivity of abstract expressionism. Much of Gilhooly's work in ceramics took colorful and figural forms such as frogs, sandwiches, frying pans, ice cream cones and hot dogs, often in wry and compelling combinations. The present sculpture is among Gilhooly's largest in scale, and is a provocative presentation of a totem composed of a most common fare, hot dogs and hamburgers.
