FROM THE PROPERTY OF THE BELO COLLECTION

Inspired by his frequent trips to Grassy Lake in northwest Arkansas, David Bates created some of his most visually arresting and complex work during the mid-to-late 1980s. In The Blue Heron (1985), a single titular bird stands at center, perched on bald cypress knees with his latest catch still clasped within his beak. Bates deftly layers landscape element by element, juxtaposing the work's bold blue subject against an ashen tree with outstretched limbs. At six feet by five feet, this large canvas incorporates a variety of repetitive linear and organic forms, creating a patterned tableau that brings together the best of Bates' natural subjects and working styles from the most sought-after period of work by the Dallas-based artist.

It would indeed have been much simpler to work with a local auction house, and we had local options. But we never once regretted going with Heritage.
