David Bates is a contemporary Dallas-based artist who draws inspiration from the physical landscape and cultural identity of the South, in particular the Grassy Lakes region of Arkansas and the Texas Gulf Coast. Bates's work combines the aesthetics of European and American modernists with folk art conventions, and he revived figurative and narrative painting starting in the 1970s and 1980s when Pop Art, and Abstract Expressionism, performance art, and post-studio work was the norm. Since then, Bates's work has told the stories of the South, one of his most notable series being a depiction of the cultural and physical effects of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans and its people. This multi-faceted artist works in many mediums including painting, hand-painted bronzes, free standing sculptures, and low wall reliefs. Bates's work is internationally known, and he has exhibited in major museums including the Austin Museum of Art, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and the Whitney Museum Biennial. Bates received his MFA and BFA from Southern Methodist University.
