Description
Fossil GuitarfishRhinobatos hakelensis
Upper Cretaceous
Haqil, Byblos, Lebanon
This fossil guitarfish, Rhinobatis hakelensis, originated from the renowned Upper Cretaceous marine deposits of Lebanon and measures over 9 inches (23 cm) in length. Presented on a tan sedimentary matrix, the specimen displays relatively outstanding preservation, clearly revealing the distinctive body form that combines features of both rays and sharks. The fossil retains the naturally rustic appearance characteristic of Lebanese material, having been prepared primarily through careful cleaning rather than extensive restoration. A repaired crack fissure extends through both the matrix and specimen, and the thin slab exhibits a most unique, subtle concavity. For added stability, the reverse has been reinforced with fiberglass. However, the fossil remains very visually compelling and displays exceptionally well. The attractive size makes it ideally suited for a display cabinet and is an appealing example of the celebrated marine fossil fauna from Lebanese quarries.
Overall Measurements: 13.31 x 9.84 x 0.39 inches (33.80 x 25.00 x 0.98 cm)
Estimate: $2,000 - up.
