Description

Zarinite Sphere
Altai Republic
Russia

Zarinite is an unusual ornamental stone from the Altai region of Russia, formed from a Copper-rich deposits composed of a complex mixture of secondary minerals, including Malachite, Azurite, Limonite, Goethite, Cuprite, and Gibbsite. These minerals combine to produce the stone's dramatic palette of deep reds, rust tones, golden browns, and occasional flashes of green and blue, creating intricate banding and swirling patterns throughout the material. Iron oxides are largely responsible for the warm, earthy hues that dominate the stone. This impressive sphere measures over 5 inches (12.7 cm) in diameter and weighs nearly 7.5 pounds (3.4 kilograms). The highly polished surface reveals a rich interplay of color and pattern, with flowing bands and mottled textures that move across the orb in dynamic layers. A small natural Malachite cavity adds further visual interest, highlighting the geological complexity of the material. Carving a sphere of this scale requires a substantial block of rough stone, making this example particularly notable. The piece displays an excellent polish and pleasing symmetry, allowing the colors and patterns to be appreciated from every angle. Bold in both size and appearance, this Zarinite sphere functions beautifully as a decorative mineral object, equally suited for display as a centerpiece or as part of any refined mineral collection.
Measurements: 5.04 inches (12.80 cm) in diameter

Estimate: $500 - up.
