Description
Fossil Starfish"Brittle Star" Ophiura sp.
Morocco
6.77 x 4.41 x 0.49 inches (17.20 x 11.21 x 1.25 cm)
Slender arms radiate gracefully across the matrix in this well-preserved Ophiura "brittle star" from Morocco, creating a delicate and highly recognizable fossil silhouette. Unlike true Starfish, "brittle stars" move using flexible serpentine arms, an adaptation that has allowed the group to survive in Earth's oceans for hundreds of millions of years. Fine detail remains visible throughout the fossilized arms and central disc, while the warm golden-brown preservation contrasts naturally against the surrounding stone matrix. The elongated composition gives the specimen an elegant, almost abstract appearance that enhances both its scientific interest and display appeal. Preserved examples of these fragile marine echinoderms provide a fascinating glimpse into ancient seafloor ecosystems and the remarkable longevity of one of the ocean's oldest surviving animal groups.
Estimate: $400 - up.
