Standing over 9 feet tall, this monumental sculpture by César is composed of various welded bronze elements, resembling a hulking compression of architectural framework. This modern-day totem is in fact an homage to the Eiffel Tower whose centenary was the same year as the work's creation. Also César created a representational bronze monument to the man, outfitted with a walking cane, a bird on his shoulder and an assemblage of discordant metalwork exiting the back of his head. Amid the density of the cut I-beams and numerous rivets, the visual cadence of the artist's massive metal block easily summons the subject, while it's airy gaps and lyrical structure has been stripped only of the soaring heights, leaving the sum of its parts below in one simple mass.

    Estimate: $150,000 - $250,000.
