    Description

    Viktor Schreckengost (American, 1906-2008)
    Man Throwing Pot
    Unfired terracotta
    9 inches high (22.9 cm)

This heavily constructed figure may have originally been designed as a bookend, judging from its weight, flat back, and relationship to pastel drawings which were recently discovered among Viktor's many sketchbook sheets. The date of this figure is unknown, although it was found in the summer of 2015 tucked in the back of a cupboard containing Viktor's drying shelves in the third-floor studio of his Cleveland Heights home. Apparent in this unfired and unglazed work is the incredible directness with which Viktor conceived and massed his forms.
