Rene Buthaud was arguably the most influential of the artists working with ceramics during the 1920s in Paris, and remains one of the most significant figures in the history of French Art Deco. Buthaud was formally trained in painting at the Ecole de Beaux Arts and later won a coveted Prix de Rome. By the early 1920s he was focused on ceramics and established the renowned ceramics department of Primavera, the decorating and interior design division of Au Printemps department store. For the seminal 1925 Paris Exposition, Buthaud create several works of simple classical forms, decorated as if a canvas, and featuring the stylized figures which would become so prominent during this period of decorative arts.
