    Description

    Stirrup-spout Vessel: Seated Figure
    Moche
    A.D. 200 - 500
    Burnished ceramic
    Height 7 in. Width 4 7/8 in.

The deftly simplified but still lively figure is seated cross-legged, the right leg and foot visible along the vessel front. The hands rest on the knees. The head is covered by a simple cloth, and large slightly-flared tubular earspools frame the cheeks. Attention focuses on the expressive face, with its prominent nose and jaw area. Facial ornament has been delicately incised at the temples, down the nose, and across the chin between the ear ornaments. An incised triangle at the center lower lip, apex upward, completes the incised facial decoration. Slip application with subtle color variation further defines the modeled lips, eyes, and hair areas. The condition is good, with a small pressure crack near the proper right rear base. The vessel may have been waxed.

    Provenance
    Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco: sale 7477E, 8 December 2003, pp.17-18, lot 3051

It would indeed have been much simpler to work with a local auction house, and we had local options. But we never once regretted going with Heritage.
