    Description

Rare Elaborate Ulua Valley Maya Vase with Extravagant Images
    c. 600 - 900 AD
    Honduras

This beautiful vase is in the Ulua Valley Maya Late Classic style with extremely ornate images, some possibly relating to Popol Vuh story telling and combined with regional tribal ceremony.

In an orange ground, the cup, probably a ceremonial cacao vessel for a lord, has a red banded rim, below this, with a series of head glyphs that alternate with repeated numerical attachments, a glyph for a war shield between them, and bordered by an undulating hatch design within its own panel. The lower two thirds of the vase is dedicated to an exquisite scene of interacting deities and elaborately garbed earthly world humans performing a grand performance. One image depicts a huge feathered serpent which has regurgitated a black skinned man wearing a jaguar loin cover and presenting his left hand in a ceremonial gesture. The feathered serpent, in a rare depiction, comes from a tapering conch shell with red painted calendrical glyphs on each spiral. Standing before the seated man is a human wearing extravagant costuming. The figure leans down, as if in a ceremonial respectful acceptance, being sub-servant. He wears a jaguar mask, jaguar feet, his head to lower back covered in an iguana skin, and displays a massive ceremonial shield with large plumes. The third figure marches forward with royal garb, carrying a plumed fan, blowing into a two tone pipe, a massive beaded necklace over the shoulders, a headdress of large plumes including disembodied eyes, and a yoke supporting a long tied bundle covering his legs. The two forward leaning figures are in celebration of the resurgence of the seated one. Quite an elaborate design with strong regional influence.

    Diameter: 6 ¼ inches
