    Description

Large Burial Urn with Human Half-figure on Lid
    Sinú (?)
    A.D. 1200 - 1500
    Buff ceramic
Lid: Height 16 in. Diameter 10 ½ in.
    Urn: Height 15 1/2 in. Diameter 12 1/2 in.

The alertly-posed female half-figure is formally closest to published examples in the Moskito Style of the lower Magdalena River region in greater Sinú. Wearing only earspools and a nose ornament, the figure has closely cropped hair in a cap-like style. Such large globular jars were used for secondary burials. The forehead has a small patch, and there are cracks and chips along with light surface stain and abrasions on the lid. The urn was broken in a number of pieces and has been reassembled with some fill.

    Provenance
    Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco: sale 7437E, 9 June 2003, lot 5029, p.10
