    Convex Face Mask
    100 B.C. - A.D. 400
Burnished ceramic, traces of white paint
    Height 10 in. Width 11 3/8 in.

This large and striking face mask is covered with deeply incised patterns which include profile zoomorphic heads that most resemble crocodilian or serpentine images. Four of these heads form a framing crest around the upper head and two outward-facing examples fill the chin area. In combination with possible variant inward-facing forms at either side of the mouth, these serve to enclose the face within their field of influence. Small circles filled with white pigment create a secondary framing rhythm. Within the overall highly stylized representation a surprisingly naturalistic nose is developed in a strongly three-dimensional manner.
The regional attribution seems convincing, and a seemingly related example is illustrated in Armand J. Labbé, Shamans, Gods, and Mythic Beasts: Colombian Gold and Ceramics in Antiquity. New York: The American Federation of Arts,1998 (p.126, fig.2). Other than minor frontal abrasions and some vertical scratches on the back, the condition is very good.
