Description
MAYA POLYCHROME BOWL WITH UNDERWORLD DEITIESAn offering bowl, probably used for the purposes of blood letting ceremony within temple rooms by royalty or used for the burning of bark paper with droplets and put inside an important cave. The tripod vessel sits on three small footings with the body having a lightly flaring body to the red painted lip on the interior, black lining the exterior, and a very rare panel depicted along the center. One image shows a spotted jaguar zoomorph seated with the head of a long beaked waterbird. This figure wears a large earflare and wears lappets normal to a ballgame player. It holds a vessel with four raised red lobes. Two large jars separate this from the other figure. The second figure shows a jaguar figure in a seated pose, black striping with rare shading techniques exist, but the head is a stork-like image with a short and pointed beak. This image wears a large earflare with designs and a long strand of beads hanging from the breast to the lower back. Techniques of the black paint indicate a rarely seen trait of intentional shading. Vessel is painted in shades of red, black, yellow, gray, and orange; rare to see.
