    Description

    Large Maya Tripod Offering Vase

    Maya, Southern Lowlands
    C. 500-800 AD
    Slipped and Painted Pottery
    8" Tall x 8½" Wide

The vessel sits on three hollow feet with textile designs, the exterior wall with a bold deep orange base and painted in shades of orange, red, and black. At the rim is a band of pseudo-head glyphs, each very similar, some appearing to be bird heads and others, turtle-like. The body has four ridges dividing the wall into panels, two with seated chiefs and two with zoomorphic deities. The seated chiefs area each elaborately garbed with plumed headdresses, having the right hand in a ceremonial gesture of royalty, and the left arm with numerals. The panels of zoomorphs are each different, one having a snouted monkey figure surrounded by bundles and the other, a deer headed monkey also surrounded by bundles. An impressive sized vessel and in excellent condition with only a couple light hairlines and surface losses. This lot requires third party shipping.
