By the early 1950's his technical findings on the reproduction of lost ancient copper and iron-spot glazes was published widely in trade journals such as Ceramics Monthly. A respected teacher, his own work was shown and collected nationally during his lifetime. Black is now considered one of a handful of influential regional pioneers of the American studio ceramics movement.
