    Gio Ponti (Italian, 1891-1979)
Pair of Rare Footed Vases from the Lancesca Series, designed 1926, produced 1933/1935, Richard Ginori
    Model #531, Polychrome porcelain
    7-5/8 x 7-5/8 x 6 inches (19.4 x 19.4 x 15.2 cm) (each)
Stamped to underside of each MADE IN ITALY, RICHARD GINORI, (three stars), 33-3, 19/35, RICHARD-GINORI, PITTORIA DI DOCCIA

The decoration from this series is characterized by the juxtaposition of geometric patterns, as seen in the suggested "stone facade" unexpectedly combined with floral motifs, or in this example with lateral feathered handles. Typical of Ginori's work, the colors were nearly always the bright complementary tones of purple contrasted to green, and they sometimes had gilded highlights and black outlines. The Lancesca series debuted in 1924, and the feather urn was a type first designed in 1926.

Multiple markings on this specific pair of urns indicate that they were produced either as one-off exhibition pieces or for a very limited run. Ponti designed the gold rectangular "tabula ansata" stamp in 1924, with the words "Pittoria Di Doccia", which indicated porcelain of complex decoration from the Richard Ginori factory. The green numbers " 33-3" mark objects manufactured from March 1933 onwards. However it is the 1935 date hand-painted in red, which is uncommon since it indicates a painted decoration with an even more advanced design than others from the same series. Here the banded socle treatment, in jade green and gold, along with an exaggerated twisting diagonal of trompe-l'oeil steps distinguishes this piece as an exceptional example within this series.
