    Description

An Indian Carved Sandstone Figure of Vyala Trampling an Elephant, Madya Pradesh, 10th-11th Century
    26 x 8-3/4 x 5 inches (66.0 x 22.2 x 12.7 cm)

A denizen of the atmosphere tramples a crouched elephant in this deep sandstone carving. This composite celestial creature's dominance over the earthly elephant symbolizes the triumph of spirit over worldly things. The material and style point to the origins of this popular Indian motif.

Property from the Collection of Eric Wesenberg, California
