    A German Porcelain Water Ewer: Air

    Staatliche Porzellan Manufaktur Meissen, Meissen, Germany
    Circa 1850-1924
    Porcelain with polychrome enamel and gilt decoration

    Marks: Crossed swords (underglaze blue), and with two hatch marks for second quality
    25 inches high x 15 inches wide x 7.25 inches deep
    The ewer of ovoid baluster form with shaped everted lip; modeled with applied figures of putti: at the base with bird on hand and at the shoulder blowing wind; Diana at the shoulder below lip holding holding a scepter and wearing a crown above a peacock and two putti at handle holding and blowing into a bagpipe with additional putto head; ribbon handle; with molded decoration of cranes, clouds, feathers and painted insects at neck. This ewer is based on a model created by Johann Jacob Kaendler in 1741 as part of a five piece set presented to to Louis XV, the model was later revised by Friedrich Eberlain in 1742.
