A Chinese Carved Soapstone Figure of Luohan, Ming dynasty
4 x 3-1/4 inches (10.2 x 8.3 cm)

Intricately carved figure of Luohan in serene facial expression, with two hands holding a branch of lotus bud. The figure with his robe draping down from he shoulders, the robe with an incised and gilt-decorated band with lotus and scrolling waves. Seated in royal ease position, on a compressed drum-form base, the top incise-decorated with scrolling foliage, the sides carved in low relief with auspicious animals against swirling wave.
