Description
Campo del Cielo MeteoriteIron, IAB-MG
Chaco, Argentina
Found: 1576
Translated as "Field of Heaven" literally, the Campo del Cielo is an Iron meteorite - once the molten core of a long-dead asteroid - that crashed into our planet in a catastrophic series of explosions about 5,600 years ago. Tons of this dense meteorite (93% Iron and 7% Nickel) hammered our planet like an anvil, carving at least 26 separate craters from the soil of what is now modern-day South America. The largest Campo del Cielo example weighs over 30 tons (60,000 pounds) and is considered a national treasure of Argentina. First discovered by the Spanish in 1576, the Campo del Cielo is one of the oldest known meteorites on Earth. This fascinating meteorite displays a marvelous shape, coupled with an intriguing history, and is an essential for any meteorite collection. This particular specimen, weighing a sturdy 8.6 kilograms (19 pounds), features an unusual shape resembling a "heart" in the abstract with a hard and textural surface. The brown example has one convex side and one flat side with a "V" neck form that culminates in two large inflated chambers. The solid and stable nature of this "Campo" along with its huge size and naturally artistic configuration make it a very collectible meteorite.
Overall Measurements: 9.06 x 6.69 x 3.94 inches (23.00 x 17.00 x 10.00 cm), weighs 8.6 kilograms (18.95 pounds)
