    BROR ALEXANDER UTTER (American, 1913-1993)
    Untitled, 1948
    Gouache and pen on paper
    7-3/4 x 13-1/4 inches (19.7 x 33.7 cm) (sight)
Signed and dated lower right: Bror Utter '48

Untitled, 1948 is a classic example of the transitional style found in Bror Utter's work from the 1940s. He has not yet ventured into radical abstraction, but his subject matter, palette, and composition are already heavily influenced by Surrealism. It contains some of the visual motifs which most often characterize his work, such as niches, vessels, and trapped figures. The figures that appear to be attempting to break free of their nightmarish confinement are very similar to those found in one of Utter's best known print series, Cells, 1944, and creates a similar psychological anxiety in the viewer. In Untitled, 1948, this dreamlike quality is only increased by Utter's signature use of a muted, precariously harmonized palette. It's composition of floating boxes against an amorphous background further heightens the surrealistic mood.

Bror Utter was a leading member of the Fort Worth Circle, a group of artists that also included Bill Bomar, Veronica Helfensteller, and Dickson Reeder. In the 1930s and 1940s, these friends and collaborators helped each other to develop their work in styles that included the influence of art movements such as Regionalism, Surrealism, and Modernism.
