    Tiffany Studios Bronze Garden Sundial and Corresponding Hour Plaques
    Circa 1925. Stamped TIFFANY STUDIOS, N.Y.
    Di.18-1/2 in. (sundial) & Di. 7 in. (approximately for each plaque)

    The central sundial circular in form, a compass rose at the center with the cardinal and ordinal directions, the triangular gnomon in the form of Pan pipes, framed by a scroll marking the hours of the day with Roman numerals, inscribed 'TIS NOW THE VERY WITCHING HOUR OF NIGHT from Shakespeare's Hamlet, with twelve disk-shaped plaques corresponding to the hours, each cast with a Roman numeral and a Shakespearean quotation relating to the hour, plus extra plaques for hours IIII, IX, and X.

    PROVENANCE:
    Commissioned by William Leonard Benedict, banker and partner of Kidder, Peabody & Co., 1920s (first installed in Duxbury, Massachusetts, then Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts);
    Purchased from Heritage Auctions, May 2008 by a Dallas Collector.


    Condition Report*: Overall in good condition.  The plate of the sundial misshapen with some losses to the patina and oxidation/discoloration in places due to weathering.  The plaques with varying degrees of patination loss and oxidation/discoloration due to weathering throughout.  One preserving mortar on the reverse from the original installation.
