Acquired by the present owner January 1974.

    Study for Deny
(1966) reflects the formal elements that epitomized the optical-art movement in the 1960's. Through manipulation of color, shapes, and scale, Riley creates distinctive and visual effects to immerse the viewer in an experience beyond that of static observation. The geometric techniques of this work allow one to participate in the optic game by playing with perception and creating a sense of self-awareness. The transition between warm and cool greys in the ovals, along with the striking "V" shaped line, generate powerful illusory and sensorial effects on the spectator's eye. The work's subtle hues and tonal contrasts of light and dark shadows, especially in the spheres of the foreground in relation to the background, are profound and the dissimilarity in color is, as the title implies, denied.
