    Benitoite on Natrolite
California State Gem Mine, San Benito Co., California, USA

Benitoite is the hallmark of the California State Gem Mine, for which it is the type locality for the species, and it is the preeminent locality in the world for the species. Presented here are two rather large and very colorful, two-toned Benitoite crystals nicely emplaced on a matrix of contrasting white Natrolite. The pair of trigonal crystals are well formed with sharp faces and are zoned with a thick, rich Sapphire-blue rim and a pale blue core for excellent contrast and aesthetics-the two trigonal crystals of Benitoite measure in at a rather large 2 and 1.4 cm, respectively. The Benitoites are ideally perched upright, or nearly so, for ultimate display ability to show off their great form and color zoning as well as the superior contrast on the white Natrolite. The large faces on the crystals have a good luster, while the thin, rectangular prism faces along the sides have a bright luster and flash when the piece is rotated. Both crystals are perfect, and this is a very well-balanced and important display miniature. The top collector example comes with a custom engraved base.
