An Exceptional Japanese Gold Lacquered Ryoshibako Document Box, late Edo Period
5 h x 7-3/4 w x 9-5/8 d inches (12.7 x 19.7 x 24.4 cm)

The rectangular box with gold fundame ground to all planes, the lid illustrates a highly-detail house in gold and red takamaki-e with okibirame tiling to the roof and shibuichi details, accompanied by a pine tree on a heidatsu textured hill, a cherry tree with gold and byakuro blossoms and a perched bird, and a peony bush with coral flowers, the trees flank a swift current stream, continuous landscape scene with corresponding trees and streams, base and box interior are decorated with scattered kirigane flower petals, rim of box and lid are mounted with silver.
