W.H. Cadbury and H.F. Marsh, Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait: Artist in the Adirondacks, Newark, Delaware, 1986, p. 254, no. 81.2.
Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait began his artistic career training with famed English lithographers Thomas Agnew & Vittore Zanetti, where he learned to capture and perfect his pre-Raphaelite attention to detail. The young artist was introduced to the Americas through celebrated portrait artist George Caitlin. In 1850, inspired by Catlin's fascination with uniquely American subject matter, Tait moved to New York and soon became known as one of America's leading sporting artists, brilliantly memorializing the American landscape and wildlife. Tait ultimately became a household name as Currier & Ives and Prang reproduced his artwork in print for the masses. In 1858, Tait became a full member of the National Academy of Design in New York, and participated in their annual exhibitions for fifty-three years.
In 1881, at the height of his career, Tait painted this dramatic scene of Long Lake in the Adirondacks. According to the register of his works he kept over the course of his lifetime, this work was completed on January 25th, 1881 for the Artists' Fund Society. The Artists' Fund Society was a New York charitable foundation that auctioned artwork to assist members and their families in the event of old age, illness, and/or death. This band of artists, including George Inness, Frederick Church, and Jasper Francis Cropsey, created an unlikely form of insurance and retirement - a rarity for artists at this time. Since acquiring the work at this auction in 1881, Late Autumn, Long Lake has been cherished by every generation of one family for almost 140 years.
Heritage Auctions is thrilled to be offering Late Autumn, Long Lake as one of the largest and most extensive examples of Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait's views of the Adirondacks.
