DescriptionTHE COLLECTION OF PAUL GREGORY AND JANET GAYNOR
AN OPALESCENT GLASS FIGURE OF A POLAR BEAR
Possibly French, 20th century
8 inches long (20.3 cm)
This opalescent glass polar bear in a naturalistic pose on four legs was a gift to Janet Gaynor from actress Claudette Colbert, whose film career flourished during the 1930s and 40s. Both Janet and Paul knew Colbert independently of one another prior to their marriage in 1964. As her film opportunities declined during the 1950s, Colbert returned to the New York stage, where she had first begun her acting career, and earned rave reviews. She starred in Paul Gregory's Broadway production of The Marriage-Go-Round with Charles Boyer, a role which earned her a Best Actress Tony nomination in 1958.
