Description
Manhattan Project GlassManhattan Project Hanford Site
Southeastern Washington, USA
This electric yellow piece of glass, further confirmed by visible conchoidal fractures, has a history that seems surreal. A sizable piece of Manhattan Project Glass, weighing a substantial 2.6 kilograms (5.7 pounds), this "rugged" specimen is unique with a complex mix of clear, frosted, geometric, and jagged surfaces. Measuring some 5 inches (12.7 cm) on a maximum diagonal edge, this artifact represents something historical and amazing. This material was specially made for the Hanford site facility in Washington, and while it may look "hot" due to the intense coloration, it is just the opposite, as the composition of 70% Lead Oxide was designed to repel any radiation away from the employees. While much of the singular glass was earmarked for the facility, it never made it to the building as protective windowing. Given the flat surfaces and angles of the offering, it could be surmised that this example was indeed part of the actual structure at some point. Producing the Plutonium for the atomic bombs that effectively ended World War II, any remnant such as this from the location critical to the military project of its namesake is obviously something special. This one, with its 'natural' attributes, as opposed to so many specimens that have been shaped and polished into more artistic representations rather than pure artifactual relics like this item, is a consummate collectible literally providing a "window" to the past. This is a true piece of history - with an electric lemon hue.
Measurements: 4.04 x 3.48 x 3.05 inches (10.27 x 8.83 x 7.75 cm), weighs 2.60 kilograms (5.72 pounds)
