DescriptionMosaic Mirror Back
Ça 600-1000 AD
Wood inlaid with shell and stone
4¼" High x 4" Wide
The mirror back's mosaic scene is framed with mother of pearl. The interior is a very well executed depiction of a supernatural with prominent chin, hooked nose, and fierce expression. He is shown in profile, holding a large carved paddle-like object. His long hair is red shell. He wears a shell ear flare centered in stone. The area around the figure is filled with cut fragments of spondylus, a shell much venerated throughout pre-Columbian America. One of the turquoise necklace inlays is missing.
