DescriptionMaya Jade Pendant with the Face of a Personage
Ça 600-800 AD
Carved from jade
2¾" High x 3¾" Wide
Maya rulers portrayed on painted vessels and stone carvings are frequently seen wearing jade pendants with images. This pendant is carved from a dark green jade. The carver has taken advantage of a particularly dark vein to place his image. The image shows a crowned ruler with plumes emerging from his headdress. His ear ornaments are plumed serpents' heads shown in profile. He wears a heavy jade necklace and his hands are positioned as though holding a bar of office.
