DescriptionJaina Figure of a Standing Dignitary
Ça 500-700 AD
Modeled ceramic with polychrome
7¾" High x 3¼" Wide
The figure stands in a commanding position with legs wide apart and arms crossed. He wears a wide belt and a loin cloth painted with Maya blue after firing. His face, with its classic Maya features, is painted with red pigment. He wears jade ear flares, necklace and two beads. His headdress is composed of plumes flaring upward from a leather or textile band. The figure functions as a whistle which issues a very pleasant low sound. The opening for blowing is located at the back of his right shoulder. Hand modeled figures from the island of Jaina are much rarer than the molded types. The figure was purchased by Mr. Eiserman in 1937.
