Andy Warhol's fascination with the repetition of an image and its endless variations is intrinsic to his prints and paintings and reflects in the lore of his famous FLOWERS series. The first lot in our esteemed section of Warhol prints is one of the most beloved variations of Warhol's Flowers. The colors of this 1970 silkscreen-two vibrant pinks, an orange, and lavender-have proven to be so unique to his process that they are essentially irreproducible and highly sought-after.
Many people who view the Flowers series think these flowers are roses or pansies. In fact, they are hibiscus flowers, transformed by Warhol's process of altering renditions-from flower to photograph to silkscreen. Warhol flattened the photograph that inspired him. He ran it through a photocopier again and again until the image became almost featureless, powerful in its reduction, both beautiful and humorous. The original photograph, published in Modern Photography in June 1964 was taken by Patricia Caulfield and showed seven hibiscus blooms.
This silkscreen, #49 of 250, was purchased at Harcus Krakow Gallery in Boston one week before Warhol's death in 1987. It has been in the private collection of one family for thirty-five years and is a rare offering.
