An Engaging Las Bocas Olmec Seated Figure
c. 1200 - 900 BC

The youthful, adolescent figure seated with legs tucked under to the left, arms raised with hands touching upper back, the face with a friendly expression, mouth open, one lock of hair at forehead. Hollow ceramic with beige slip and accents in red pigments on ear ornaments, lips, and hair. This kind of relaxed, even coy, pose of the creamware figures with baby faces is a genre of Olmec art known as "Las Bocas", named after an archeological site in Puebla, Mexico. Repairs to lower section visible under UV light, less than 10% restoration.
