    A German-born artist who came to the United States as a child, Walter Ufer is renowned for his non-romanticized paintings of the Pueblo Indian in the magnificent landscape settings of New Mexico. He was formally trained at Germany's Royal Academy and spent seven years in Europe, painting in Paris, Italy, and North Africa. Upon his return to America, Ufer worked in Chicago and earned several prestigious honors such as membership in the National Academy of Design, New York. In 1917, he permanently settled in Taos where he became one of the early members of the Taos Society of Artists.

    Condition Report*: unlined original canvas, substantial cracklure throughout, overall yellowing due to surface dirt and old varnish, areas of loose overpaint in sky areas in upper and center right (appears to be an attempt to fill cracklure), some light overpaint in trees upper left and lower right.
