A contemporary Texas artist, Tom Ryan began his career as an illustrator and is today known for his realistic paintings of western genre subjects. He studied at the Art Students' League in New York with Frank Reilly, visiting other notable artists' studios such as Andrew Wyeth in the early 1950s. Settling in Lubbock in 1967, Ryan would frequently travel to the 6666 Ranch in Guthrie to make drawings and take photographs for his paintings. He was given a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in 1996. In excellent original condition, this painting demonstrates Ryan's ability to realistically render western scenes.
