One of the founding members of the Taos Society of Artists, Oscar Berninghaus was renowned for his ability to render figures and animals in expansive Southwestern landscapes and was considered to be one of the foremost Indian painters in the country by his contemporaries. He developed an interest in art through the lithography business where he was employed in St. Louis and began to take courses at the city's School of Fine Arts. Berninghaus traveled through the Southwest, producing drawings and illustrations for rail companies and Anheuser-Busch, before permanently settling in Taos in 1925. His style is characterized by short, quick brushstrokes that produce a unique texture, and his paintings are known for their accuracy. Throughout his career, Berninghaus was devoted to the Taos Art Colony because he believed in the uniquely American subject matter of the Southwest. His paintings reflect his genuine affection for the Pueblo Indians of Taos and their culture, which Berninhaus was careful to respect and accurately represent on his canvases. This painting shows Pueblo Indians on horseback crossing the vast plains of Taos with Hondo Valley in the background. It is in excellent original condition, with the artist's personal label attached to the frame, a rare feature to survive.

Provenance: By decent through the family of the artist to the present owner.
