    CARL RUNGIUS (American 1869-1959)
Moose in a Clearing, signed and dated 1907
    Oil on canvas
    24in. x 32in.
    Signed lower right

Born and formally trained in Germany, Carl Rungius became one of the most noted painters of wildlife scenes in America. He often painted in plein air and his experience as a big game hunter augmented his understanding of wildlife subject matter. Influenced by the styles of German Romanticism and Realism as a student, Rungius arrived in New York in 1894 and made his first trip West in the following year. He was a member of the National Academy of Design in New York, but spent most of his career traveling throughout the West and Northwest, ultimately settling in Banff, Alberta. This painting, which is in excellent original condition, is characteristic of Rungius's depictions of big-game animals in impressive landscape settings.

    Estimate: $50,000 - $70,000.
