In 1912, Walt Kuhn and Arthur B. Davies traveled to Europe to select works for the landmark Armory Exhibition held in New York City in 1913. As one of the integral organizers of the Armory Show, Kuhn also exhibited his painting Morning, 1912 (Norton Gallery, Palm Beach, Florida). Painted one year after the Armory Show, Kuhn's At the Dressing Table, 1914, illustrates the impact that exhibited works by Van Gogh, Cézanne, Picasso and Matisse had on Kuhn's fauvist painting style. He would later refine his style to a modernist aesthetic featuring clowns and circus performers painted in a bold expressionist style.
